# Rooftop Solar for Your Home: How It Works, Rough Maths and What to Check

Vorneo Property · [居家与生活](https://vorneo.id/zh/artikel/topik/hunian-gaya-hidup/) · 2026-10-25

The sun shines over South Kalimantan almost all year, and the electricity bill is a fixed cost in every household. So it's no surprise more people are asking whether rooftop solar is worth it. The answer depends on how you use power, the state of your roof, and the PLN rules in force when you install.

This guide explains how rooftop solar works in plain terms, how to think about cost and savings, and what to check before you decide. PLN is Indonesia's state electricity company and the grid operator you'll be dealing with.

## How rooftop solar works

Solar panels turn sunlight into direct current. A device called an inverter converts that into the alternating current your appliances use. In Indonesia these systems are often called PLTS atap (Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Surya atap, literally "rooftop solar power plant").

There are three common set-ups:

**Grid-connected (on-grid).** The panels and inverter feed into the house wiring, which is also connected to PLN. During the day the house uses solar power first and tops up from PLN. At night it runs entirely on PLN. This is the simplest set-up and usually the cheapest, because there's no battery.

**Off-grid.** No connection to PLN at all. Daytime power is stored in batteries for the night. It suits places the grid doesn't reach, but batteries add a lot of cost and need replacing after some years.

**Hybrid.** Connected to PLN and fitted with batteries. The batteries can act as backup during a power cut. This is the most expensive option.

## PLN rules: check before you buy

A grid-connected system goes through an application with PLN. The rules have changed several times, including how much capacity you're allowed to install and how surplus power sent back to the grid is treated. Under older schemes that surplus could reduce your bill. Newer rules no longer count it the same way.

So don't calculate savings from an old article or brochure. Before you buy any equipment:

- Ask your local PLN office or PLN's official channels about the process, the maximum capacity and any quota for your area.
- Ask the installer who handles the PLN application, what documents are needed and how long it takes.
- Keep every approval document, because a buyer may ask for them when you sell.

## How to think about cost and savings

Panel and inverter prices move around, so this guide doesn't quote figures. The method is more useful anyway.

First, look at how you use power. Take your bills or prepaid token records from the last few months and estimate how much goes on daytime use. A house that's empty all day while everyone is at work or school will save less than one that's busy during the day, say with a home business, air conditioning running through the afternoon, or someone working from home.

Second, count the full cost, not just the panels. Include the inverter, mounting frame, cabling, protection devices, installation, the PLN application and batteries if you go hybrid or off-grid.

Third, divide the full cost by the expected monthly saving. That gives a rough payback period. Compare it with the warranties on the panels and the inverter. If payback lands close to or beyond the inverter's lifespan, the numbers aren't very attractive.

Fourth, weigh the things that don't show up on a bill, such as backup power during outages or simply wanting cleaner energy. Those are fair reasons, as long as you see them as choices rather than savings.

Get quotes from more than one installer, itemised by equipment, brand, capacity and warranty. A quote with a single total is hard to compare.

## Check the roof first

The panels will sit on your roof for years, so the roof has to be ready.

**Shade.** Watch for shadows from trees, poles, water towers or a taller house next door in the morning, at midday and in the afternoon. Shade on part of one panel can drag down the output of the whole string.

**Direction and tilt.** South Kalimantan is close to the equator, so the sun stays high all year and many roof directions still work. A little tilt helps rain wash dust off the panels. A good installer will work out the best position for your roof.

**Frame strength.** Panels and mounts add weight. Light steel or timber framing needs checking, especially on an older house. A frame that sags, rusts or rots should be fixed first.

**Roofing.** Mounts go on differently for clay tiles, metal tiles and corrugated zinc. Careless work causes leaks. Ask how the installer seals the bolt holes and whether there's a warranty against leaks. If the roof already has problems, see our guide to [checking roofs and gutters](/en/artikel/cek-atap-dan-talang-rumah-bekas/) and sort them out before the panels go up.

## Check the house wiring

Solar ties into the house's electrical system, so the wiring has to be sound. Old cables, loose joints and a distribution board without proper protection need fixing first. On an older home, [check the electrics](/en/artikel/cek-listrik-rumah-bekas/) before adding anything new.

Ask the installer about lightning protection and earthing too. The highest roof in the street is the most exposed in a thunderstorm.

## Upkeep in Kalimantan's climate

Panels don't need much care, but a few things help:

- Clean dust, leaves and bird droppings off the panels now and then with water and a soft cloth.
- Keep an eye on output through the inverter display or app. A sudden drop can mean a fault.
- In a long dry season, haze from fires can cut output for a while.
- Check the mounts and bolts occasionally, especially after strong winds.

Keep the warranty cards, serial numbers and installer's contact details in one place.

## Solar and resale value

Does solar raise a house's sale price? It can appeal to buyers who care about power bills, but not every buyer will pay more for it. Tidy paperwork matters more: the PLN approval, warranties still in force and a maintenance record. If you're buying a house that already has panels, ask for all of these and check the system still works.

## The bottom line

Rooftop solar makes the most sense for a house that uses a lot of power during the day, with an unshaded roof and a strong frame. Compare the full cost with realistic savings, get several quotes, and check the current PLN rules before buying anything. Fix the roof and wiring first, not afterwards.

## 常见问题

### Can rooftop solar wipe out my PLN electricity bill?

Usually not completely. Panels only produce power during the day, while many households use the most electricity at night. Without a battery, the house still draws from PLN after dark. The biggest savings go to homes that use a lot of power during the day.

### Do I need PLN approval to install rooftop solar?

For a system connected to the PLN grid, there's an application process with PLN, and the rules have changed several times. Ask your local PLN office or PLN's official channels about the current rules before buying equipment, and make sure your installer knows the process.

### What kind of roof suits solar panels?

A roof that's free of shade from trees or buildings for most of the day, with a frame strong enough for the extra load and roofing in good condition. Fix leaks and weak framing before the panels go up, because removing them later adds cost.
