# Check Mobile Signal and Fibre Internet Before Buying a House

Vorneo Property · [Tips & Inspection](https://vorneo.id/en/artikel/topik/tips-survei/) · 2026-10-25

Signal and internet used to be an afterthought when buying a house. Now many people work, study, sell and pay bills through their phones. A house with weak signal or no cable internet can make daily life a hassle.

The problem shows up most on the edge of town, in new housing estates, and in houses set back from the main road. The good news is that you can check most of it in a single visit.

## Why check before you buy

You can't fix signal or cable networks yourself. You can renovate the kitchen, but you can't move a tower or run fibre to your front door. If you're buying to live in for years, or plan to rent the house out, this affects both comfort and appeal.

If you work from home, it may be a deal breaker. Ideas for setting up a home office are in [a work-from-home room](/en/artikel/ruang-kerja-di-rumah/).

## How to check mobile signal

The signal bars on your screen don't always reflect real quality. Run a few tests:

- **Speed test**. Install a speed test app and run it in several spots: the terrace, the living room, the bedrooms and the kitchen. Note the download and upload speeds and the response time.
- **Inside a closed room**. Thick brick walls, metal roofs and coated glass can weaken signal. Shut the door and test again.
- **Calls and video**. Call someone for a minute or two. Try a short video call as well. Dropouts or choppy audio are a clear sign.
- **Different operators**. Signal strength can vary a lot between operators at the same spot. Bring a phone with another operator's SIM, or ask a friend on a different network to come along.
- **Peak hours**. Signal that's strong by day can slow down in the evening, when many people nearby are online at once. If you also do a [night viewing](/en/artikel/survei-rumah-malam-hari/), repeat the test then.

Ask the neighbours which operator works best in the area. People who have lived there a while usually know more than a coverage map in an app.

## How to check fibre availability

Fibre usually gives the most stable home connection, but coverage is still patchy.

- **Ask providers with the full address**. Contact several internet providers and give them the full address or the map pin of the house. Ask whether the address is covered, what installation costs and how long it takes.
- **Look at the poles**. On the street in front of the house, check for fibre optic cables on the poles and small distribution boxes mounted on them. Poles with no internet cables can mean the network hasn't arrived.
- **Ask the neighbours**. Ask which provider they use, how long faults usually take to fix, and whether it drops out in the rain.
- **Ask the developer**. In new estates, some developers have a deal with a particular provider. Ask whether there is only one choice of provider, and whether the network is already installed or only promised.

If the seller or the estate's sales team says "internet is available", ask to see a house that is already connected. A promise that the network is coming may not be kept any time soon.

## On the edge of town

Cities like Banjarmasin and Banjarbaru keep spreading outwards, and new estates are often built faster than the internet networks that serve them. In areas that are still gardens, swamp or empty land, signal can be weak because towers are few and far between.

That can change as an area develops, but there's no guarantee when. Don't buy on the assumption that the network will arrive next year. Ask yourself whether you can live with things as they are now. Other trade-offs between living close to work and living on the outskirts are covered in [close to work or on the edge of town](/en/artikel/beli-rumah-dekat-kantor-atau-pinggir-kota/).

## Options if the network falls short

If you love a house but the signal is poor, you still have options:

- **A mobile modem with an outdoor antenna**. The antenna is mounted high up and pointed at the nearest tower. Results can be far better than a phone indoors, depending on distance and obstacles.
- **A signal booster**. Some devices pick up signal outside and rebroadcast it indoors. Make sure the device is certified and installed according to the rules, since unofficial boosters can interfere with the network.
- **Satellite internet**. It can reach places that cable doesn't. Compare the equipment cost, the monthly fee and your needs.
- **Mesh Wi-Fi or extra access points**. If internet reaches the house but not every room, these help spread the signal.

Ask providers what each option costs, then add it to your moving budget.

## Don't forget the power supply

Home internet depends on electricity. The modem, router and other network gear go down in a power cut, and some nearby towers can be affected too. Ask the neighbours how often the power goes out in the area and how long it usually lasts.

If your work can't afford to drop, consider a small backup power unit for the modem and router, or a mobile data plan as a fallback when the home connection fails. The house's own wiring is covered in [checking the electrics in a used house](/en/artikel/cek-listrik-rumah-bekas/).

## Write it down

Keep simple notes for each house you view:

- Operators tried and speed test results in each room.
- How the phone and video calls went.
- Fibre providers that say they cover the address.
- What the neighbours said.

These notes let you compare houses fairly. A wider checklist for the surroundings is in [what to check in the neighbourhood around a house](/en/artikel/cek-lingkungan-sekitar/).

## In short

Test signal in several rooms with more than one operator, ask providers about fibre coverage using the full address, look at the cables on the poles and listen to the neighbours. If the network falls short, price the alternatives before you decide.

## Common Questions

### How do I check mobile signal at a house I want to buy?

Don't rely on the signal bars. Run a speed test app in several spots, including inside a bedroom with the door shut, then try a phone call and a video call. If you can, bring phones with SIM cards from different operators.

### How do I know if fibre internet reaches a house's address?

Contact internet providers with the full address or the map pin of the house and ask whether it is covered. On site, look for cables on the poles and a distribution box near the house, and ask the neighbours which provider they use.

### What are the options if fibre hasn't reached the area?

Options include a mobile modem with an outdoor antenna pointed at the nearest tower, or satellite internet. Speed, cost and stability differ, so weigh them against your needs, especially if you work from home.
